Air Cargo Challenge 2024

We participate in the Air Cargo Challenge 2024 in Aachen and are already hard at work planning, designing and building!

The Competition

The Air Cargo Challenge is an international competition for aerospace engineering students in which teams design, construct, build, and fly remote-controlled model aircraft that must transport a specific payload. The competition evaluates participants based on criteria such as aircraft design, efficiency, and performance in the transport task. It promotes practical engineering skills and interdisciplinary teamwork by simulating real-world challenges in the air cargo industry. AkaModell Munich has been participating very successfully in the competition every two years since 2007.

Competition Task

The Air Cargo Challenge presents participants with two main tasks: First, the teams must develop aircraft capable of transporting billiard balls as payload, taking into account both the volume and weight of the cargo. Second, they are tested in speed and efficiency flights, where they must cover a specific distance in the shortest possible time while minimizing power consumption. Secondary tasks include adhering to a specified loading time, considering the limitations of the transport box, preparing a technical report, and staying within the prescribed takeoff distance.

The three graded flight phases

Ascent: Take off and reach target altitude in 30 seconds

Efficiency flight: Cover as much distance as efficiently as possible

Speed flight: Fly as fast as possible, as far as possible

Insights into our work

The design of our aircraft model is complete.

We carried out drive measurements for this purpose.

The technical report has been written and submitted.

We are now in the final construction phase and look forward to the competition in Aachen and the international comparison!
